Cigarette Filter Myco-Remediation Program

Did you know? more than 7 billion cigarette butts are littered into Australia's environment every year where they immediately begin leaching damaging pollutants into waterways and soil systems.

We are looking to improve our environment, support local venues with waste management and raise awareness about the environmental impact that littered cigarette filters can cause on the environment. Through our partnership with Australian charity, No More Butts we’re developing a Cigarette Filter Remediation Recycling Service to be launched in 2021.

Simply order a fully recyclable box from No more Butts, fill it and scan the QR Code. Your cigarette filter waste will be collected and sent to our facility for processing with our patented fungi cultures.

Cigarette Butt Remediation program involves diverting cigarette filter waste from litter and landfill to use as a training substrate for the MYC strain. This process breaks down the microplastic cellulose acetate components and additives left over in the filter. As the mycelium grows through the filters and digests the butt a new composite material is formed. From this remediation program we aim to identify methods to process the heavy metals present and develop a clean material by-product from the process.
