MYCO-MATERIAL

Mushroom based packaging and insulation production uses just 12% of the energy required for plastic production, with 90% fewer carbon emissions.

By providing stylish practical alternatives to single use plastic in packaging as well as sound insulation, and an accessible way of remediating cigarette filters Fungi Solutions aims to create a positive shift toward a more circular waste economy. Through community engagement and education we aim to assist individuals and companies to create tailored sustainable solutions for their waste challenges.

Key advantages of Mycelium materials over traditional synthetic materials:

  • Low cost

  • Carbon capture: mycelium captures twice its weight in c02 during cultivation.

  • Biodegradability = 6 weeks to 3 months to fully biodegrade in home compost conditions.

  • Low environmental impact

  • Improves acoustic insulation = at least 75% absorption at 1000hz (typical frequency of road traffic noise)

  • Lightweight

  • Fire retardant and reduces flame spread and smoke production.

  • Thermally insulating

  • Buoyant

Current options for disposing of cigarette filters are very limited, (recycling, litter, landfill, and incineration are the only options currently available). Our remediation program at Fungi Solutions offers a way of neutralising these toxic microplastics.

Did you know?

A cigarette butt can take up to 15 years to break down, whether in the natural environment or in landfill, even then they only turn into smaller microplastic particles.
